Goddess Kali, First Of The Mahavidya

Goddess Kali is the first of the 10 mahavidya, or wisdom goddesses in the tantric tradition. She is often portrayed as dancing on the dead body of her consort Shiva. She has black skin, 4 arms, wide open glaring eyes, a necklace consisting of severed heads and her tongue lolls wildly out of her big wide open mouth, laughing at the attachments of us mortal humans. Indeed a terrible spectacle to behold!

This gruesome iconography hides a lot of very deep symbolism. Our coming death is symbolized in the severed heads around her neck. The polar aspect of the universe is represented by the transcendent (dead) body of shiva who is the masculine principle while she herself symbolizes the wild uncontroleable feminine energy. Kali also symbolizes wild and dangerous erotic energy which is this aspect we will go more in depth with in this article.

Goddess Kali and eroticism

Sexual energy is in its essence feminine and needs to be guided by our conscious masculine principle. If not so it becomes wild and frantic and will control us instead of us controlling it. Kali appears terrible to us because we cannot appreciate her huge power and our own sexual potential. Any woman who starts a worship of Kali will awaken her sexuality becoming able to fully enjoy life, her own energy and knows of the power of love.

Egoistic minds which are stiff and fearful cannot encompass such great feminine sexuality. Down through the ages men have feared this feminine power and the female power has been suppressed for centuries. As we fear the erotically awakened powerful woman, we fear life itself which is feminine and expansive.

Kali is portrayed as so terrifying to mock this huge fear we have inside of life.

Goddess Kali – Goddess Of Kundalini Shakti

In the tantric tradition it is stated that our spiritual evolution commences with a deep awakening of our sexual energy. This energy is called Kundalini and is stored at the base of the spine. When we succeed to awaken this energy it will start to dance up our spine transmuting into finer types of energy as it goes upward finally meeting the pure consciousness of lord Shiva at the top of the head.

Like a snake tamer plays the flute and his snake dances for him, our kundalini will dance for us when we awaken her through intense spiritual practice.

Goddess Kali and Tantric Rituals

Kali is invoked by meditating with her mantra (which is given by a Guru or tantric master) and can be worshipped by the continual gazing upon a yantra (see picture). Working with yantras is a powerful way to calm down the mind and to enter into a trance like state with the Goddess.

Kali can also be worshipped through erotic tantric rituals where the woman is first adored by the man as an embodiment of the Goddess before the foreplay and lovemaking start. After the ritual the man and woman separate and each make an individual tantra yogic practice (consisting of certain yoga positions and pranayamas ie breathing exercises) or meditations upon the Goddess.

The results of such rituals are deeply profound and will awaken deep mystical processes in the hearts of the lovers.

Hans Havasi is a teacher of yoga and tantra and a musician who has devoted his life to making music for the tantric goddesses.
