Musical Instruments And Children – A Simple Guide
Is your kid a music nerd? I was growing up (and still am today), but if you want your child to succeed here are a few tips I have learned from my own experience.
Is it going to be violin or trumpet? Flute or guitar? There are as many different instruments as there are people in the world. Here are a few tips to help you wade through it all.
Think About The Expense
School band, orchestra or even choir can be cheap (maybe even free). It will depend on your school and their budget but this is how I got started.
America is overflowing with amazing musicians who teach youngsters how to play. Consider signing your child up for a group class over a private tutoring session to save money and introduce the social aspect into playing music.
It is also important to consider the cost of actually renting the instrument. Renting a flute is much different than renting a set of drums. There is no point in spending money that you don’t have. Plan long term and your child will always have something to play.
Think About Interest
Let’s be honest, whose interest are we talking about here, yours or theirs? I say both. If you don’t want to listen to a screeching violin for 10 hours a week, then you probably shouldn’t be going down that path.
On the other hand, if you enjoy the instrument yourself, your excitement could actually contribute to the success of your child. Think support system.
Show Your Child Different Types Of Music
I went through a million different instruments during my time in music. Mostly because every year I seemed to discover a new type of music. Jazz trumpet sounds very different than Bach violin.
The more “awesome” your child thinks their instrument is, the more likely they are to play it longer and practice better. Exposure to different music can solidify this “awesome” factor in their brains. Musicians call it “influence”.
Go To The Music Store
This is the nirvana of musical instrument detective work. Let your kid run around the music store. If they don’t respond to anything in the store, then maybe they just aren’t as interested as you thought.
They will probably gravitate to the instrument that they want to play the most. This is valuable information that you can use to weigh against the other points. After all, it is all about the children.
